The Z06 is a serious piece of engineering. The flat-plane crank LT6 engine spins to 8,600 RPM and demands more from its oil than a typical passenger car. So when we showed up in Lake Mary to take care of this owner’s oil change, we made sure we were running by the book.

What Changed: From 0W-40 to 5W-50 Starting in 2022
If you’re a Z06 owner (or thinking about becoming one), this is worth knowing.
For Corvette Z06 model years before 2022, the factory oil spec was 0W-40. Starting with the 2022 model year, GM changed the recommended oil to 5W-50. Heavier weight, designed to handle the heat and stress this engine puts oil through.
Running the wrong spec in a high-performance engine like the LT6 isn’t a small thing. The wrong viscosity can mean inadequate protection at high RPM, faster wear, and reduced engine life. If you’re still running 0W-40 in a 2022 or newer Z06, that’s the first thing worth fixing.

OEM Filter: GM Part #12730579
A small detail that matters: the filter on this job was the OEM GM part, #12730579, with a fresh gasket installed.
We don’t cut corners on filters. A cheap filter on a high-end engine is a false economy. Every Corvette we service gets the correct OEM filter, period.
A quick technical note for anyone curious: the oil drain plug on the C8 is a 3/8 inch square drive quarter-turn plastic piece. Different from what most drivers are used to, and another reason an experienced technician matters when you’re working on a newer Corvette.
