How to Reset the Oil Life on a 2020 Acura TLX (Works on 2015-2020 TLX Models with Push Start)

If you just had your oil changed on your Acura TLX and the dashboard is still telling you “oil life 15%” or showing a wrench icon, your maintenance reminder didn’t reset itself. That’s normal. The car has no idea fresh oil just went in. You have to tell it.

This is a quick walkthrough from John at Johnny on the Go on how to reset the oil life on a 2020 Acura TLX. The same procedure works on 2015 through 2020 Acura TLX models equipped with the push-start button. It takes less than two minutes once you know where to look.

Hi, this is John with Johnny on the Go, and here’s exactly how we do it after every TLX oil change in the field.

Why the Oil Life Reset Matters

The TLX, like most modern Acuras, uses a Maintenance Minder system. Instead of a fixed mileage interval like every 3,000 or 5,000 miles, it watches how you actually drive (short trips versus highway, idle time, ambient temperature) and calculates remaining oil life as a percentage. When that percentage drops below about 15%, you’ll see a wrench icon and an “oil life” warning.

That number doesn’t reset just because someone drained the pan and put in fresh oil. It only resets when you tell the car the service has been performed. If you skip the reset, two things happen.

First, the wrench warning keeps nagging you, even though the oil is brand new. Second, the Maintenance Minder will recommend your next oil change too early because it’s still counting against the old service date.

Reset it once, the car starts a fresh count from zero, and the schedule works correctly going forward. Whether you’re getting the work done at a shop, a dealership, or out in the driveway with Johnny on the Go, the reset is part of a complete oil change. We do it on every TLX visit before we leave.

Before You Start

You’ll need the vehicle parked, in Park, with the doors closed. Have the key fob inside the cabin. The whole thing takes about 60 seconds.

You will NOT need to press the brake pedal, start the engine, pull any fuses, or use any tools. The entire process is done from the driver’s seat using the scroll wheel on the steering wheel.

Step-by-Step: 2020 Acura TLX Oil Life Reset

This procedure also works on 2015 through 2020 Acura TLX models with push start.

Step 1: Power on the dash without starting the engine

With the door closed and the key inside the vehicle, press the engine start button twice without pressing the brake pedal. This puts the car into accessory mode and wakes up the dash displays. If you press the brake at the same time, the engine starts. We don’t want that for this procedure.

Step 2: Open the multi-function display menu

Use the scroll wheel on the left side of the steering wheel to navigate the dash menu. Scroll until you reach Vehicle Settings and press in on the wheel to select it.

Step 3: Find Maintenance Info

Inside the Vehicle Settings menu, scroll to Maintenance Info and press in on the wheel again to open it. You’ll see your current oil life percentage along with any other due maintenance items.

Step 4: Choose Reset

Scroll to highlight Reset. The dash will give you a Reset or Cancel option. Use the scroll wheel to land on Reset, then press the wheel to confirm.

You should see a “reset complete” or similar confirmation flash on the screen.

Step 5: Cycle the ignition and verify

Tap the start button again to shut everything off. Then turn the vehicle on (you can start the engine this time, or just go back into accessory mode) and scroll back through the same Vehicle Settings, Maintenance Info path. The oil life should now read 100%, and the wrench warning should be gone.

If it still shows the old percentage, repeat the process. Sometimes the confirmation press doesn’t register the first time, especially if you’re scrolling quickly.

That’s it. You’re done.

What If the Reset Won’t Stick?

A few rare situations can cause the reset to behave unexpectedly.

If multiple maintenance items are due, the TLX tracks oil life along with tire rotation, brake fluid, coolant, transmission fluid, and other intervals. If more than one item is overdue, the system may show the next overdue item right after the reset. That isn’t a failed reset. It’s just the car telling you what’s next on the list.

Aftermarket head units or accessories can also interfere. If the previous owner installed something that taps into the can-bus, dash menus can occasionally get glitchy.

Finally, if a real fault is logged, a wrench warning paired with a check engine light or service-required notice that won’t clear may indicate a code stored in the system that needs a scan tool. That’s where mobile diagnostics comes in. We can pull the codes at your location and tell you exactly what’s going on without you driving anywhere.

When You Should Probably Skip the DIY Reset

There’s nothing wrong with doing the reset yourself after an oil change. It’s literally a couple of button presses. But if any of the following are true, save yourself the headache.

You aren’t 100% sure the oil change was actually completed correctly. The reminder is paired with a flashing oil pressure light (that’s a hard stop, not a reset issue). You don’t know when the oil was last changed and the dash is showing 0% or below.

In those cases, give us a call. We’ll do the oil change, document the service to your vehicle’s Carfax history (every Johnny on the Go service gets reported), and reset the Maintenance Minder before we leave.

Why Carfax Reporting Matters on a TLX

Acura TLXs hold their value reasonably well, especially the well-maintained ones. When it comes time to sell or trade, a complete Carfax service history is one of the strongest signals to a buyer that the car was looked after.

Most independent shops don’t report. We do. Every oil change, brake job, tire rotation, and battery swap is logged so your TLX shows a clean, consistent maintenance trail for its entire life. It costs you nothing extra and it can mean hundreds (or thousands) more at resale.
