Chevy Silverado Code Scan, Diagnosis, and Alternator Replacement in Windermere: A Day-in-the-Life of a Mobile Diagnostic

A customer in Windermere called Johnny on the Go this week for a code scan and diagnosis on their Chevy Silverado. The truck was throwing warning lights and the customer wanted a real answer, not a parts-store free scan that just hands you a code printout, but a proper diagnosis from someone who could read what the codes meant in context and find the root cause.

This one is a good day-in-the-life look at what a mobile diagnostic actually involves on a modern truck. Here’s how the job went from the first scan to the alternator coming out, and why the verification step in between is the part that separates a real diagnosis from a guess.

The Setup: What a Mobile Diagnostic Bay Actually Carries

Before any work starts, the tools come out of the van. On this Silverado job that meant the scan tool (a professional unit, not a parts-store code reader, the difference matters), a battery and charging system tester, mobile Wi-Fi for accessing service information and TSBs on the spot, a Bluetooth OBD dongle for live data while moving around the truck, and a flashlight. Sounds basic, but the flashlight is the most-used tool in mobile diagnostics. Engine bays at customer driveways aren’t lit like a shop bay.

That setup is the whole point of mobile diagnostics, we bring the shop to the customer. Same tools, same diagnostic discipline, no tow truck and no waiting room.

Step One: Scan the Codes and Read the Story

The scan was the starting point. Pulling codes on a modern Silverado isn’t just reading the check engine light — modern GM trucks store fault data across multiple modules. We pulled codes from the engine control module, the body control module, and the battery management system on the truck. We also looked at freeze frame data, which captures the conditions present when each code was set. Freeze frame is where a real diagnosis starts pulling ahead of a parts-store scan: knowing what RPM, what load, what voltage, and what temperature the truck was at when the fault happened is half the puzzle.

The pattern on this Silverado pointed at the charging system. Voltage-related codes, accessory module complaints, and freeze frame data showing low system voltage during conditions when the alternator should have been carrying the load. That’s a signature, not a guess.

Step Two: Verify Before You Replace

This is the step a lot of shops skip, and it’s the step that separates a real diagnostic from a parts-cannon repair.

We put the battery and charging system tester on the truck. We checked the battery’s state of charge and its cold cranking amp performance under load. We measured voltage at the battery posts with the engine off, then again at idle, then again with electrical loads on (headlights, blower, rear defrost). We watched what the system voltage did during a quick alternator load test. We looked at the alternator’s output ripple — the small AC component superimposed on the DC output that tells you whether the alternator’s internal diodes are healthy.

Verification matters because a Silverado that scans like an alternator problem could be a few different things. A bad battery puts more load on the alternator and can scan like an alternator issue. A bad ground or a corroded connection at the battery can drop voltage and look exactly like a charging fault. A failing serpentine belt or a worn tensioner can keep the alternator from being driven at full speed and produce the same symptoms.

On this Silverado, every other charging-system component checked out healthy. The battery was holding its specifications. The grounds were clean. The belt was in good condition and the tensioner had proper tension. The only failure point was the alternator itself, output was inconsistent and the ripple measurement was out of range.

That’s a verified diagnosis. Not a guess. The customer was paying for a real answer, and they got one.

Step Three: Replace the Alternator

With the diagnosis locked in, the alternator replacement was straightforward. We removed the serpentine belt, disconnected the electrical connections at the alternator (battery cable disconnected first for safety), unbolted the alternator from its mounting bracket, and pulled it out. The new alternator went in the reverse order, bolted to the bracket, electrical connections reconnected, belt routed back per the manufacturer’s belt diagram.

A few details that matter on a GM truck like this Silverado: the battery cable terminal at the alternator gets a proper torque spec (it’s a high-current connection and a loose terminal will arc and overheat), and the belt routing has to follow the diagram exactly, even a single pulley out of order changes belt tension geometry and can cause squeal or wear.

Once the new alternator was installed, we cleared the codes, reset the battery management system, and ran the truck through a verification cycle. Voltage at the battery posts, voltage at idle, voltage under load, ripple measurement, all back in spec. The diagnosis was confirmed, and the repair was confirmed.

Step Four: The Last Verification

The job isn’t done when the part goes in. The job is done when we’ve confirmed the new part is working correctly and the original codes don’t come back.

We ran the truck for a few minutes, loaded the electrical system, and pulled codes one more time. Clean. The Silverado was charging correctly, the modules were happy, and there were no pending faults. We cleared the readiness monitors so the customer could go drive the cycle and have everything report ready on the next inspection.

That last verification step is the difference between “we replaced the alternator” and “we fixed the customer’s truck.” Same physical work, different professional standard.

Why Mobile Diagnostics Wins on Charging System Work

A Silverado with charging system problems is a truck that should not be driven across town to a shop. Every drive on a failing alternator deepens the discharge on the battery, stresses the modules, and risks the truck dying somewhere inconvenient. Mobile means the truck stays parked while the diagnosis and the repair happen on the spot.

It also means the customer doesn’t have to coordinate a tow, a ride home, a ride back to pick up, and another ride home. The whole job happens at their driveway in Windermere. Time saved, money saved, no extra wear on a vehicle that was already telling them something was wrong.
