A 2011 Chevy Silverado came onto our Orlando schedule for a leak inspection. The customer had spotted fluid on the driveway and wasn’t sure what it was. They’d been adding fluid to one reservoir hoping it was the right one, and the spot under the truck kept coming back. They wanted us to put eyes on it before guessing again.
A leak inspection is one of the cleaner mobile diagnostic visits we do. Customer’s driveway, customer’s truck, our brake cleaner, our borescope, and a methodical look at every fluid system on the vehicle. By the end of the visit the customer knows exactly what’s leaking, where it’s leaking from, and what the fix costs. No guessing.
On this Silverado we found two separate issues stacked on top of each other. The transmission cooler line was dripping fresh ATF. And while the borescope was down there, we caught the AC low-pressure suction line rubbing against the AC high-pressure line. Two issues, both small if caught now, both expensive if missed.
Here’s the breakdown of how we approached the leak diagnosis on this Silverado, why brake cleaner is the first tool out of the bag on a fluid hunt, why a fluid that looks like power steering can turn out to be transmission fluid, and how the borescope picked up a separate AC line problem the customer didn’t even know they had.
The Brake Cleaner Reset
The hardest part of a leak diagnosis on a truck that’s been leaking for a while is that the entire underside is already dirty. Old fluid has run, dried, and re-coated the area. Fresh fluid drips through the same path and lands on top of the old residue. You can stare at it for ten minutes and not see the active leak point.
The fix is a reset. We spray quick-dry, non-chlorinated brake cleaner on the suspected area, wipe it clean, and let the surface come back to a neutral state. Brake cleaner evaporates fast, lifts old residue, and leaves the metal looking dry and consistent. Now we have a clean playing field. Any fluid that comes back is fresh fluid leaving the leak point right now.
A quick note on which brake cleaner. We use non-chlorinated specifically because chlorinated brake cleaner is more aggressive on rubber and plastic, and there’s a lot of both on a Silverado underside. Non-chlorinated quick-dry is the right tool here. It cleans, evaporates fast, and doesn’t damage anything it touches.
After the spray and wipe, we wait. A minute or two later, the leak announces itself. On this Silverado the fresh fluid bead came up at the trans cooler line. That’s the active leak point.
Power Steering or Transmission Fluid? The First Identification
Fresh leak identified, next question is which fluid. On a Silverado of this generation the suspects in the front-end fluid lineup are power steering fluid, transmission fluid, brake fluid, coolant, and engine oil. Each has its own color, viscosity, and smell.
When we first looked at the bead of fluid coming back, we said power steering fluid. The color was reddish-pink, the viscosity looked light, and the location was forward enough on the truck to make power steering plausible. That was the working hypothesis for about thirty seconds.
Closer look changed it. The color was actually a deeper red than power steering fluid typically is. The viscosity was a touch heavier. And the location of the active drip wasn’t at the power steering pump or hose. It was at the transmission cooler line that runs from the radiator back toward the transaxle.
Power steering fluid and ATF are easy to mix up at first glance. Both are red, both are oily, both come out of small lines in the front of the vehicle. The way to tell them apart is to follow the source.
