We went out to Lake Mary to check out a 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee 3.6L that was experiencing a misfire. At first glance, it could’ve been something simple like a spark plug or ignition coil.

Starting with a Scan
We began by connecting to the vehicle and running a full scan.
This Jeep required access through the security gateway, which we were able to unlock and proceed with diagnostics. Right away, one fault code stood out:
- P0306 – Cylinder 6 Misfire
At this point, a misfire on a single cylinder can come from a few common causes:
- Spark plug wear
- Faulty ignition coil
- Fuel injector issues

Looking Beyond the Code
While scanning gives you direction, it doesn’t always tell the full story.
During a visual inspection, something else caught attention.
The coolant reservoir didn’t look right.
- Coolant level was slightly low
- There was visible staining
- And most importantly, there was a strong combustion smell coming from the reservoir
That’s not normal.
Coolant should never smell like combustion gases. That’s usually a sign that something inside the engine is allowing gases to enter the cooling system.

- Combustion smell in the coolant system

At this point, the suspicion shifts from a simple ignition issue to something more internal.
Why This Points to a Head Gasket Issue
When a head gasket begins to fail, it can allow combustion gases to leak into the cooling system.
This can lead to:
