2018 Chevy Equinox LT 1.5 Turbo Fuel Leak Diagnosis in Winter Park: Why Injector Number Two Was the Culprit and How We Pinpointed It in Minutes


A 2018 Chevy Equinox LT with the 1.5 turbo came onto our Winter Park schedule with a complaint that had already been passed up by another shop. The customer described a strong fuel smell from the engine bay and a visible fuel leak on the driveway. She’d already taken the truck somewhere else, and that shop told her they couldn’t quote the repair because they couldn’t figure out where the fuel was coming from.

That’s the part we keep coming back to. A diagnosis you can’t reach is not a diagnosis. The customer ended up with no answer, no quote, and the same fuel smell when she drove home.

We took the appointment. We figured it out. Fuel injector number two was the leak. Here’s how we found it, why the test method matters, and why a fuel leak on a turbocharged engine is not a wait-until-next-paycheck problem.

The Ignition-On Priming Test

The right test for an external fuel leak on a port-injected engine is straightforward but only works if you do it in the right order. The 1.5 turbo on this Equinox uses high-pressure fuel rail injection. When the key goes from off to run, the fuel pump primes the rail for about two seconds before the engine even cranks. That priming pulse is enough to push fuel through any compromised seal, gasket, or cracked injector body, and it does so on a dry, cleaned engine where the leak point is easy to see.

The method on this truck was simple. Turn the ignition off. Wait the recommended time for the rail pressure to bleed down. Clean the suspected area with a dry cloth so the surface goes back to a neutral state. Turn the ignition on. Watch.

Within seconds, fuel came out of injector number two. Not a drip. A wet bead pushing up around the injector body. Right next to it, injector number one stayed completely dry. That’s the diagnostic moment. Same fuel rail, same pressure, two injectors side by side, one leaking and one not. The leak was unmistakably from the body of injector two.

Why the Dry Control Injector Matters

A diagnosis isn’t an opinion. It’s a comparison. The reason we always look at the surrounding injectors during a leak test is that fuel running across the top of an engine can fool you. Fuel runs downhill. It pools in low spots. It coats nearby surfaces. If you only look at the wet area, you might guess wrong about which injector is leaking and end up replacing the wrong part.

On this Equinox, injector one was dry. That ruled it out instantly. Injectors three and four were dry as well. The wet injector was number two, and the bead came up directly from its body, not from any of its neighbors. That’s how we make a confident call on which part needs to be replaced.

A shop that doesn’t run a controlled priming test the right way tends to end up in one of two places. Either they replace too many parts to be sure, which costs the customer extra, or they replace too few and the leak comes back. Both of those outcomes feel like the shop “couldn’t figure it out.” The customer ends up shopping for a second opinion.

The Runout Path and the Belt Problem

The shape of the cylinder head on the 1.5 turbo creates what we call a runout. Fuel that escapes from an injector at the top of the engine doesn’t sit in place. It runs along the head, finds the path of least resistance, and ends up dripping off the front of the engine. On this Equinox, the runout path was clear and the dried fuel residue traced the route from the injector body all the way to the front of the head.

That matters for a reason most customers don’t think about. The serpentine belt sits at the front of the engine. When fuel drips off the head onto a spinning belt, the belt gets coated with raw fuel. Raw fuel attacks rubber. The belt’s polymer breaks down faster, it loses grip, and it can crack and shed material into the pulleys.

A fuel injector leak isn’t only a fuel system problem. Left to run for long enough, it becomes a belt problem, then an accessory drive problem, then a no-start problem. We caught this one before the belt was destroyed, but the inspection still flagged that the belt would need to be watched closely after the injector replacement.

Why a Fuel Leak on a Turbo Engine Is Urgent

Any fuel leak under the hood is a problem. A fuel leak on a turbocharged engine is more than a problem. Three reasons.

First, the turbocharger sits in the hot part of the engine bay. The turbine housing runs at temperatures high enough to ignite raw fuel that drips onto it. A fuel leak that finds the turbo is a fire risk that doesn’t take much to escalate.

Second, raw fuel in the engine bay seeps into electrical connectors, wiring harnesses, and rubber components that weren’t designed to live in a fuel-soaked environment. The damage compounds invisibly until something else fails, and that next failure feels random when it’s actually downstream of the original leak.

Third, the smell itself is a giveaway. A customer who can smell fuel from inside the cabin is breathing in unburned hydrocarbons every time the climate system pulls fresh air. That’s not a problem to live with for a few weeks.

A fuel leak is a now problem, not a later problem. We told the customer the same thing.

Why Mobile Diagnosis Wins on a Job Like This

A vehicle with a known fuel leak should not be driven across town for a second opinion. Every mile increases the risk. A mobile diagnostic visit lets us come to wherever the truck is parked, run the priming test on the spot, and isolate the leak without the truck ever moving.

That’s the whole point of bringing the shop to the driveway. The customer doesn’t have to take a chance on the drive. The truck stays put until we know what’s wrong, and the customer gets a real answer that day instead of a “we can’t quote it” from a shop that didn’t have the right approach.

Most independent shops don’t report. We always do. A future buyer pulling Carfax sees a documented fuel system inspection with a clear note about which injector was replaced and why. That’s the resale story we want every customer to have.

Symptoms That Could Mean a Fuel Injector Leak

Hard starts after the vehicle has been sitting overnight.
