A customer called Johnny on the Go before leaving for a trip with a specific request: her 2016 BMW 228i had developed a bad misfire, she had already bought the parts, and she wanted us to take care of the repair while she was away. No coordination, no rides to and from a shop, no holding her travel plans up. She’d leave the keys in a planned location, we’d pull her car cover off, do the repair, put the cover back on, and put the keys back inside her home before she got back.
That’s the kind of service request that exists only for mobile auto repair. Try asking a brick-and-mortar shop to do that. They can’t — and not because they wouldn’t want to, but because the entire model doesn’t allow for it. Drop-off and pick-up are mandatory checkpoints in their workflow. We don’t have those checkpoints.
Here’s how the job went on this 228i, why this kind of trust-based service is what mobile is actually for, and what the BMW N26 plugs-and-coils repair specifically involves.
What the Customer Asked For — and Why It Worked
The brief was simple: come out while she was away, pull the car cover, do the plugs and coils with the customer-provided parts, put the cover back, lock up, and return the keys to the house. We did exactly that.
This works because mobile auto repair is built around the customer’s location, not the shop’s location. The car was already where it needed to be. The parts were on hand. The customer had given us access. The entire job happened on her property, with no movement of the vehicle and no chain-of-custody questions. She came back to a car that started cleanly, idled smoothly, and was ready to drive, and a house that was locked up the way she left it.
That’s not a fancy service trick. That’s just what mobile is when it’s done right.
The Pre-Repair Picture
Before we touched anything, we ran an Autel auto-scan on the car. The 228i had a clear picture of the misfire problem stored across multiple modules. The DME (Digital Motor Electronics) module had six faults, with the misfire codes leading the list:
The codes pulled told the whole story. Misfires on several cylinders, including specific cylinder 2 misfire codes. Codes flagged “intermittent” and “damaging exhaust gas after starting up”, which is BMW’s way of telling you the misfire is bad enough that raw fuel is making it into the catalytic converter, where it will eventually destroy the cat if left unchecked.
The roof function center (FZD) had three unrelated faults, the head unit (HUB) had one, the IHKA climate system had one, and the transmission was clean. The misfire was clearly the customer’s main complaint and the priority repair.
The Parts the Customer Provided
The customer brought us a full set of CarQuest spark plugs and ignition coils. CarQuest is a brand sold through Advance Auto and the parts often come from CARDONE, which is a respectable rebuilder for ignition components. It’s not OEM Bosch, but it’s not bargain-bin either. We’ve seen this combination hold up well on this generation BMW.
When a customer provides parts, our job is to verify they’re correct for the vehicle (right plug heat range, right gap, right coil part number for the engine), inspect them for shipping damage, and install them properly. All boxes checked here.
Why the BMW N26 Plug Job Is Trickier Than It Looks
The N26 is the 2.0L turbo four that powers the 228i in this generation. From the top, it’s an accessible engine compared to some of BMW’s larger units, but it has its own quirks.
The plastic engine cover comes off first. Then a smaller side cover. After that, four of the five coils are reasonable to access. The fifth — the rearmost one, set back near the firewall, is genuinely tricky. There’s not a lot of room to maneuver, and getting the new plug into the well without dragging the side electrode against the wall (which would close up the gap) takes care. The technique we use on this engine is to drop the plug into the well first using gravity, then guide it down with a finger to keep it centered, while making sure the connector for the harness near that cylinder is held out of the way.
That last plug is where a careful tech and a rushed tech are going to produce very different outcomes. A bent or closed plug gap on cylinder 4 will give the customer back a misfire on a different cylinder, and the whole job is a waste.
We took our time on that back plug. It went in clean.
The Coils Going In
With the plugs torqued to spec, the new coils dropped into place. The connectors clicked back on, the wire harness routed cleanly, and we worked our way back across the engine until all five were installed.
Before buttoning anything up, we cleared the misfire codes and the long-term misfire counters, then ran the engine through a short idle and a few throttle blips. Smooth idle, clean throttle response, no rough running.
The Post-Repair Scan
Once the car had warmed up and gone through a basic drive cycle in the driveway, we ran the Autel auto-scan again. The DME, the EGS transmission management, the DSC stability control, the ACSM airbag module, and the KOMBI instrument cluster all came back the same way: Pass, No Fault.
That’s the result we wanted. The misfire codes from the prior set had been addressed by the actual repair. The car was running clean. The catalytic converter wasn’t getting any more raw fuel. The customer’s 228i was sorted.
Putting the Car Back the Way We Found It
Once the engine bay was buttoned back up and the engine cover was reinstalled, we pulled the cover back on and strapped it down the way we’d found it. Keys went back inside her home. Doors locked. Vehicle exactly the way she’d left it before her trip, minus the misfire.
She got home to a car that had been quietly fixed while she was traveling. That’s the kind of service moment that’s hard to design and easy to deliver when the customer trusts the mechanic. The trust is the asset. The work just confirms it was placed correctly.

This isn’t a one-off scenario. Plenty of customers travel, plenty of customers want repairs handled while they’re away, and plenty have a car cover that needs to come off and go back on for the repair to happen.
